(Can you tell that its one of my all-time favourites?) This was not something I've experienced before in any other escape room and not something I personally enjoyed - but the production value of the room really outweighed this for me. It seems like due to the mechanics of the game, Temple Raider requires the games master to enter the room with you for the very first part of the game. Would've been nice for the team to ask a bit about us as a group before hand to gauge our experience. We didn't ask for any clues, and although stating in the pre game we would only be given clues if we asked for them, it seems as though the games masters were a bit too keen to give us nudges of help when we didn't ask for it. We went as a group of Escape Room enthusiasts having all at one point worked at escape rooms (this was number 28 & 29 for me personally). The recent spate of arrests in connection to the game is probably the final nail in the coffin for Club Penguin Rewritten, which had already survived one closure in 2020. Created in 2017, the popular remake had already undergone its own share of scandals prior to getting shut down in April, including a 2018 coup where a hated admin ruling with an iron flipper was overthrown, followed by a 2019 data breach that exposed account details of 4 million players. Among those, Club Penguin Rewritten was by far the most popular and enduring. Other clones were forced offline seemingly because Disney just didn’t like that unauthorized parties, even less seedy ones, were using their intellectual property - a common issue with the famously litigious Mouse. man, was arrested on “suspicion of possessing child abuse images.” In the fallout of the revelations - during which Disney moved aggressively to shut down Club Penguin Online - one admin, a U.K. As if that weren’t unsavory enough, a 2020 BBC investigation found rampant racism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, and predators who were soliciting sexual content from minors on the private server. On one notable offshoot, Club Penguin Online, those skirmishes were replete with hacking, blackmail, doxxing, and swatting. Competing versions battled to try to gain the most users in service of that mission, admins of some of the games waged enthusiastic, internecine penguin warfare, splitting into factions and launching attacks on each other with the aim of freezing out their rivals. All together, there have been nearly 80 Club Penguin private servers seeking to replicate some element of the original experience.īut, one by one, the fan-made games started getting shut down, as the copycats struggled with moderation - or worse. There was even Grand Theft Penguin, an attempted synthesis of the wholesome edutainment game with the blood-spattered criminal underworld of Grand Theft Auto. There was New Club Penguin, Air Penguin, Club Herbert, Club Reggie, and Club Penguin Brasil. Following the official version’s closure, its remaining community has led a nomadic existence, flocking from clone to clone in the universe of Club Penguin “private servers” that have sprung up over the years. Little more than a year later, Disney also discontinued Club Penguin Island, the much-derided successor released in the wake of the original game’s shuttering.īut like an avian Rasputin, Club Penguin has proved difficult to kill. In 2017, Disney officially pulled the plug, bringing players to tears as they gathered to exchange heartfelt goodbyes before the icy tundra speckled into eternal darkness. Over the years, though, as much of Club Penguin’s user base grew up and more sophisticated games began to take its place, interest dwindled and the pay-for-play membership revenues it depended on - which allowed players to purchase in-game Puffle pets or snazzy outfits - declined. At its peak, hundreds of millions of players from over 200 countries were waddling around this frosty digital playground, spending their time ice fishing, sled racing, fitting their penguins with stylish accessories, or leafing through its virtual weekly newspaper, The Penguin Times. The game was envisioned as an online space for children that was actually safe to use - a goal that was accomplished, in part, by encouraging users to rat out their peers for inappropriate behavior. A virtual world where players - typically between the ages of 6 and 14 - embodied penguins in a browser-based cartoon chatroom, Club Penguin originally launched in 2005 and was acquired by Disney in 2007 for $350 million. ![]() ![]() ![]() The dramatic, unceremonious conclusion to Club Penguin Rewritten is just the latest in the strange saga of Club Penguin, a once-popular massively multiplayer online game that, despite being long abandoned by its corporate overlord Disney, somehow just won’t die. While the three suspects were later released, the Club Penguin Rewritten website remained under control of the police’s intellectual property enforcement unit, drawing the curtains on a fan-made game whose users reportedly numbered in the millions. Inhabitants of the ice-capped cartoon world of Club Penguin Rewritten, the largest unofficial offshoot of the antarctic open-world game, were banished to digital hell when the City of London Police raided the website for copyright infringement and arrested three people in connection to the site. The victims were not chinstrap penguins, nor adorable Adélies, but a species possibly even more endangered in the wild: Club Penguin players. Earlier this April, a pitiless culling of penguins suddenly took place. ![]() Secondly, take a sneaky goblin in a siege machine that can launch them at the center of the base. Seth, the older and slightly saner of the two, with a tattoo snaking round his neck and down onto his arm, coerces his sexually deviant sibling into kidnapping faithless minister Jacob (Keitel), his jailbait daughter Kate (Lewis) and adopted son, and using their camper van to get across the Tex-Mex border, pitching up at the aptly named Titty Twister, an open all-night bar with a fine line in hostess action to wait until dawn when Carlos, their south of the border contact, will arrive. Seth and Richie Gecko (Clooney and Tarantino, decked out in Reservoir Dogs garb) are criminal brothers on the lam, heading for Mexico after a prison breakout with a bag full of moolah and the entire Texas law enforcement community on their tail, having left numerous bullet-riddled corpses in their bloody wake. Swelled from its obvious B-movie origins to must-see status thanks to Tarantino’s near messiah-like standing (even after Four Rooms) and Rodriguez’s impeccable action movie credentials, and featuring the Quentmeister in his first, proper acting gig, this funky fusion that is two-thirds guns’n’muthafuckas and one-third vampires’n’gore is a real (blood)blast, a rollicking, slam-bang piece of entertainment that goes for the jugular and the funny bone. There are no surprises left by the ending, but if you can get on board with a band of Hollywood heavyweights - including a snake-toting cameo from Salma Hayek - embracing an unapologetic genre movie, you'll find something to sink your teeth into here. The first script that Quentin Tarantino was paid to write, back in 1990 - for the tidy sum of $1,500 - has been dusted down and spruced up with Desperado director Robert Rodriguez at the helm, a biggish budget and a high profile cast lead by the latest superstar-in-waiting, ER’s George Clooney. In the process it has to make do with less of Tarantino's snappy dialogue and give itself over to a raucous final act in which blood and gore paint the walls. This is because the second half of the movie flips a switch that transforms it from a noir-ish getaway tale into a gonzo vampire flick. From Dusk Till Dawn also stars Clooney in one of his earlier movie roles, clearly keen to break with his nice-guy image by being cast against type as a deadpan thief and killer, with Tarantino in tow as his predatory and violent brother.ĭespite all the talent involved, it's fair to say that this 1996 film is regarded as a cult favorite rather than a classic. And there are quite a few around at the moment! So if you will excuse me I will be in a hole playing video games for a while. Oxenfree has caused the exponential growth of my love of sidescroller platforms, horror, and short indie games with gorgeous art and atmosphere. Mostly this is because I like to get all the achievement awards, but it is also because sometimes, depending on what you do or don’t do the story progresses in a different way, and I love to see all the different possible endings, even if they can make me distraught (here’s looking at you Life is Strange). For completionists like me, the second run is always the one where I have to be absolutely sure to collect every item I may have missed in the first round (usually only a few that have annoyingly slipped my notice). Story is told in bursts as you explore the island, and there is always something a little extra to discover, providing a strong incentive to investigate carefully. Oxenfree only takes about a day to play one run-through, so the plot has to make sure that every minute counts, and it shows. The fact that these games aren’t overwhelmingly long is definitely part of their appeal. As I mentioned before, it is the interpersonal relationships that really win my heart in story-heavy games like this, and while I think some of the way these relationships change is a little arbitrary and fickle, overall the relationships examined are deep and complex and handled in a way that they deserve.Ĭhoice-based games that give added incentive to replay have quickly risen to be among my favourite game genres. Also, it’s just such a good game that it would be worth a replay for simple enjoyment factor. Your relationships with the other characters determines the ending that you get, though it is well worth it to play more than once, because at the end of the first play-through, not all mysteries can be said to have been solved. The same can be said of your relationship with best friend Ren, his crush Nona, and brother’s girlfriend Clarissa. You play as Alex, a somewhat snarky girl who sometimes never gives you quite the right choice of words – because who ever has the right words? Her brother, Michael, has died and she has a new stepbrother, Jonas, who you can either reject or get closer to throughout the story. The main use of the radio, as is revealed throughout the story, is its abilities to open portals to another realm, and speak with those angry few on the other side. By twiddling the dials you can access different channels that tell you more about the story, or even just add a creepy atmosphere to an already pretty damn creepy abandoned building. The most interesting mechanic is introduced a little later – the radio. The game starts by introducing the most basic mechanic – you talk with your friends by picking one of (usually) three options or by not saying anything, and how your build or destroy your relationships effects the ending of the game. Oxenfree has all of this in spades, as well as the addition of some fantastic play mechanics I’ve seen in a while. If you are aware of my extreme love of Life is Strange, then you will understand my love of games that provide the opportunity for meaningful choices, the navigation of interpersonal relationships, and rich storytelling and gameplay.
